Somatic bodywork faqs

Somatic Bodywork - Gentle work for the Nervous System

What is Somatic Bodywork?

The word somatic simply means “of the body.”

Our minds and bodies are constantly communicating with one another. Stress, overwhelm, grief, anxiety, and even our daily responsibilities can all show up as physical tension.

Somatic Bodywork is a gentle approach that focuses on helping your body recognize safety so it can relax more naturally. Rather than working primarily on muscles, the session is designed to support your nervous system and strengthen the connection between your mind and body.

Many people describe feeling deeply relaxed, grounded, or more connected to themselves afterward.

What are my options?

Full Somatic Bodywork Session

A full Somatic Bodywork session is dedicated entirely to nervous system regulation and body awareness.

· You remain fully clothed.

· You’ll lie comfortably on your back (supine) for the entire session.

· The session uses gentle touch, breathing, and guided awareness to encourage relaxation and help your body let go of protective tension.

This option is ideal if you’re feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained, constantly “on,” or simply curious about experiencing this type of bodywork.

Massage with a Somatic Reset

If you’re coming in for a traditional massage, you can choose to begin your session with a Somatic Reset.

The Somatic Reset usually takes place at the beginning of your massage to help your nervous system settle before we begin therapeutic bodywork. If it feels helpful, these techniques may also be used throughout your session.

After the reset, your massage continues just as you would expect, using therapeutic techniques to address pain, tension, and areas of concern.

Many clients find that when the body has a chance to settle first, muscles become more willing to relax, which may reduce the amount of deeper pressure needed to achieve lasting results.

Is Somatic Bodywork a massage?

Not in the traditional sense.

While it uses therapeutic touch, a full Somatic Bodywork session focuses less on working muscles and more on supporting your nervous system and increasing body awareness.

If you’re looking for traditional massage with muscle-specific work, the Massage with a Somatic Reset may be a better fit—or we can decide together which approach best meets your needs.

Will you still work on my muscles during a Massage with a Somatic Reset?

Absolutely.

The Somatic Reset is designed to prepare your body for massage—not replace it.

After beginning with nervous system-focused techniques, we’ll continue with therapeutic massage tailored to your goals, whether that’s relieving neck tension, addressing low back pain, improving mobility, or simply helping you relax.

My hope is always to work with your body rather than against it. When the nervous system begins to settle, muscles often soften more naturally, allowing us to use the amount of pressure your body actually needs.

What might I experience?

Every Body Responds Differently

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to experience Somatic Bodywork. Some people notice very subtle changes, while others experience more noticeable shifts as their nervous system begins to regulate.

Possible experiences may include:

  • Deep relaxation or a feeling of safety.
  • Slower, deeper breathing.
  • Warmth or coolness in different areas of the body.
  • Tingling or other temporary sensations.
  • Small muscle twitches or spontaneous movements.
  • Emotional release, such as crying or laughing.
  • Memories or emotions surfacing unexpectedly.
  • Feeling lighter, calmer, or more grounded after the session.
  • Increased awareness of where you're holding tension in your body.

In some cases, people have reported more dramatic nervous system responses, such as larger involuntary movements or shaking. These experiences are uncommon and, when they occur, should never be forced. The goal of Somatic Bodywork is simply to create an environment where your body feels safe enough to respond naturally in whatever way it needs.

Mind-Body Awareness

One of the most fascinating aspects of Somatic Bodywork is becoming aware of how closely the mind and body are connected.

Sometimes it can be helpful to gently ask yourself questions like:

  • "If my shoulders are carrying so much tension, what am I carrying in my life?"
  • "If my jaw is constantly clenched, what am I holding onto?"
  • "If my low back or hips feel tight, is there anything in my life that's making me feel unsupported?"
  • "If my sciatica is flaring up, what has become a 'pain in the butt' lately?"

These questions aren't meant to suggest that every physical symptom has an emotional cause. Rather, they invite curiosity and self-awareness. Sometimes our bodies have something to tell us, and sometimes tension is simply the result of physical demands. Both can be true.

Will I have to talk about my emotions?

This is bodywork, not counseling. While you’re always welcome to speak if you feel the need, staying quiet and connected to your body often allows for a deeper experience. Sometimes talking can bring us back into our head, which may make it harder to access the kind of somatic release we’re aiming for. If you notice that you’re thinking a lot or having trouble staying present in your body, feel free to let me know. I have a few simple questions and cues that can help guide your attention back into your body and support a more grounded experience.

Some people enjoy talking during their session, while others prefer silence. If emotions come up naturally, they are welcome, but there is never any expectation to share more than you’re comfortable with.

Is Somatic Bodywork right for me?

It may be if you’ve ever thought:

· “I can never seem to relax.”

· “I carry my stress in my body.”

· “Massage helps, but the tension always comes back.”

· “I feel like I’m constantly on the go.”

· “I’d like to feel more connected to my body.”

If you’re unsure which option would be the best fit, just ask. I’m always happy to help you decide based on your goals for the session.
